These terms apply to use of this website and to date requests made through it. They are not the complete performance-booking contract. Full booking terms are supplied for review before payment and take precedence in relation to a confirmed event.
Information and date requests
We aim to keep our descriptions, prices and availability information accurate. A date request is an enquiry only and does not create a booking or reserve a date.
Confirming a booking
A booking is confirmed only after The Murder Society has approved the venue and date, supplied the applicable booking terms and received the agreed £2,000 fee in full. All cast-hospitality requirements are confirmed before payment.
Creation of the exclusive mystery
After confirmation, The Murder Society creates the plot, six characters, motives and clue sequence for the agreed event. The production is staged for that booking only and will not subsequently be sold or performed for another client. A returning hotel receives a new case.
Creative process and venue details
During a focused creative conversation, the hotel provides the information needed for venue research and event planning and agrees any factual venue references that may be used. Real staff, guests or sensitive local stories are included only with appropriate permission. The Murder Society then writes the production independently. To protect the mystery and its solution, the completed script is not submitted to the hotel for approval before the event.
Professional cast and production commitment
Payment starts the research, writing and production process and allows The Murder Society to contract six professional actors for the agreed date and begin the substantial rehearsal required for a completely new production.
Hotel responsibilities
Unless agreed otherwise in writing, the hotel is responsible for its venue, catering, staffing, event marketing, ticket sales, guest enquiries and guest accommodation. The hotel retains all ticket, dining, bar and accommodation revenue.
Cast hospitality
The hotel provides the six-person cast with the same three-course evening meal being served as part of the event, overnight accommodation and breakfast, a private changing, rehearsal and breakout area as close to the performance area as possible, and complimentary parking. Accommodation arrangements are agreed before the booking is confirmed.
Hotel cancellation or transfer
Because creative work begins and professional actors are contracted specifically for confirmed events, fees are non-refundable following cancellation by the hotel. Subject to the definitive booking contract, a hotel may normally transfer its booking once to another mutually available date when at least eight weeks' notice is provided.
Low ticket sales
The Murder Society does not cancel a confirmed performance solely because the hotel has sold fewer tickets than expected. Ticket sales remain a matter for the hotel and do not alter the agreed £2,000 fee.
Cancellation by The Murder Society
In the highly unlikely event that The Murder Society cancels a confirmed performance, the £2,000 fee paid by the hotel will be refunded in full. The complete booking contract sets out any further applicable provisions.
Venue assessment and safety
The Murder Society liaises with the hotel regarding venue suitability and arranges a pre-event venue assessment. Appropriate event risk-assessment documentation and evidence of relevant insurance can be supplied.
Performance equipment
Our actors project clearly without amplification, and the scripts are designed to engage the audience while keeping ambient background noise to a minimum. Battery-operated equipment is used only for the welcome and occasional ambient music, so no mains power is normally needed.
Intellectual property and exclusivity
The Murder Society retains copyright in the script, characters, clues, evidence and production materials. The venue-exclusive promise prevents the completed mystery from being sold or performed for another client; it does not transfer copyright or prevent reuse of our established production format, dinner timings, writing methods or general working practices. Scripts, solutions and performance materials remain confidential and may not be copied, recorded or commercially reused without written permission.
